IDG LAUNCHES BIO-IT WORLD; APPOINTS KEVIN DAVIES EDITOR IN CHIEF

First Publication Targeting the Intersection of Information Technology and Life Sciences to Debut in March

BOSTON, MA – JANUARY 7, 2002 – Bio-IT World, Inc., IDG’s new business unit established to support the rapidly emerging technology information needs of the life sciences market, today announced the launch of the much anticipated publication, Bio-IT World and the appointment of Kevin Davies, Ph.D., as editor in chief. Scheduled to debut in March, Bio-IT World is the first publication to focus on the convergence of information technology and the life sciences, including the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biochemical, healthcare and agricultural industries. Kevin Davies, Ph.D is an accomplished editor and author who brings significant experience in biochemistry and genetics to his role as editor in chief.

Dr. Davies is the founding editor of Nature Genetics and author of the widely acclaimed book, Cracking the Genome: Inside the Race to Unlock Human DNA, a comprehensive account of the human genome project. Following research positions at MIT’s Whitehead Institute and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Davies began his distinguished career in scientific publishing in 1990. Most recently, he served as editor in chief of Cell Press, where he directed the launch of three new journals, including Cancer Cell.

"The convergence of information technology and the life sciences has created a new breed of professionals who depend on computing power to drive the research and development process, helping to bring new products to market more quickly and efficiently than ever before," said Dr. Davies. "Bio-IT World is the first publication to specifically address the unique needs of this community by providing the latest information on IT and bioinformatics news, technology products and services for life sciences applications."

Bio-IT World
The premiere issue of Bio-IT World, with an initial controlled circulation of 25,000, debuts at IDG World Expo’s BioITWorld Conference & Expo in March. The publication’s mission is to provide quality, focused editorial information which enhances scientific research, the R&D process and the business success of the biotech and pharmaceutical industries through the effective utilization of bioinformatics and related applications of information technology in the life sciences. Bio-IT World will serve professionals in the life sciences who are involved in bioinformatics, drug discovery and development, genomics, proteomics, and related disciplines in industry, government and academia. With its tagline – ‘Strategic IT Applications for the Life Sciences’ – Bio-IT World will chronicle the evolution of this new IT frontier through timely news analysis and case studies focusing on key scientific, engineering and business issues, market trends and new products.

“I am delighted to hear about IDG’s plans to launch Bio-IT World,” said Inna Kuznetsova, integrated marketing communications manager of IBM Life Sciences. “This new publication will provide a much-needed forum for topics related to the convergence of information technology and life sciences. Bio-IT World’s audience focus on bioinformatics specialists differentiates it from both general IT and R&D media. IBM is working with many bioinformatics companies to deliver solutions that can help accelerate drug discovery and development. We are looking forward to new insights from and a relationship with Bio-IT World.”

Editor in Chief, Kevin Davies
Dr. Davies earned a B.A. in biochemistry from Oxford University and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of London. After conducting research at the Whitehead Institute and Harvard Medical School, he joined the editorial staff of the prestigious British science journal Nature in 1990. In 1992, he became the founding editor of Nature Genetics, the premier scientific journal of genetics and genomic research. Dr. Davies also worked at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as science editor and program administrator and has written for numerous publications including The Times, New Scientist, THES, Newton, Lingua Franca and Prospect. In addition to Cracking the Genome, he is also co-author of Breakthrough: The Race to Find the Breast Cancer Gene.

"We are pleased to have someone of Dr. Davies‘ caliber leading our editorial team," said Dr. Morris Levitt, president and CEO of Bio-IT World, Inc. " His editorial vision and unrivaled domain expertise in life sciences complements IDG’s strong technology focus and enables us to serve the unique information needs of our audience."
